How RUDE of this woman! Yeah, some people are just beyond reason and it's best to ignore them... that said, I totally understand what Ron did. It would've taken all of my being to keep my trap shut!

I'm sorry you had to encounter such foulness :/

Magnus and Zachy need to meet!

OMG! That is a funny story, Paloma! Wow! I felt like going back in and doing the same type of thing, but I realized interacting with her would be useless. There is no turning stubborn folks around. Next time I am going either ignore, or at best laugh at them. I so wish she could have heard me speak, but she ignored me too. Best to ignore ignore ignore. Annoys the crap out of people.

Let me tell you a little story. Kind of similar situation, but Aviva was much younger - less than a year old. We're in a casual restaurant eating before 6pm on a weekday. We're doing all the right things, correct? She starts getting fussy, but at this point we had finished and start packing up to leave. A nasty grumpy old woman at another table yells at us to control her. Things start getting heated, but surprisingly her dinner companions tell her to chill out, that it's no big deal.
Long story short, she and David shared words, and she ended up with a glass of ice water on her head courtesy of David! OMG! I bolted because I thought they were going to call the police! (we already paid). I run into the waiter on the way out who kind of implied the woman deserved it! I was so angry at her and at David for acting so rashly. She deserved it, but he could have been in big trouble.
Anyway, miss you guys!

For the record, I didn’t say “Oh Pipe Down!”, I said “Oh, shut your mouth, or I’ll shove this $5 cauliflower down it!…” Or some variation on that.

Thanks, Abby - very true. It's experiences like this that, thank goodness, are rare - but when they happen are unpleasant. I guess that is why they call them "learning experiences". They certainly open my eyes, and makes me realize how lucky I really am when someone else, especially with no kids, goes out of their way to to tell me they have been admiring my son from another table. I never expect that from people, but have started to get used to it. I've become even more mindful - and maybe perhaps I have benefited greatly from the experience. Another day older, and a little bit wiser at mommyhood!

What a pill that woman was! I agree, it was about her, not about Zachary or you. I would've reacted the same way you did. There's no way you can win over a person like that. Luckily I've found those people to be in the minority. Most people love to see babies and little kids. Next time you see a mom will a toddler, I'm sure you'll go out of your way to be nice and tell her how well behaved her child is!

I also realized something else after the fact: wearing a ponytail, little makeup and a schlubby looking outfit may have made me look like a "young" mother. Usually when people mistake me for being 20 years younger, I take that as a compliment. Oh well. I promise not to grow up to be a grumpy lady. This is the first time in the 865 days of Zachy's life that I have been called out for bad parenting skills. I did the calculations and that makes me 99.884393% effective in my disciplining abilities. ;)

:shaking head: Some people are stoopid. And mean.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with it.

What a difficult situation! An option to consider, if (heaven forbid) something like it happens again, is appealing to the authority - in this case the maitre d' or manager. Ask that you or the other party be moved. Don't get into a fruitless conversation with a moron. My favorite saying on the subject (I don't remember the source): "Don't give haters your time or energy. You're not the jackass whisperer."

Unless you were at a high-end, expensive restaurant for a late dinner (i.e., a place and time where child-haters could reasonably expect not to see children), then you were 100% in the right. Not 50%. Not 75%. Not 99.9%. 100%.

Of course, that doesn't really help much, nor does handing the woman the children's menu and suggesting she get out her own crayons and keep herself busy (tempting though it might be... along with telling her where she might store the children's menu in her own anatomy).

There's nothing you could have done to make it better for her... 'cause it wasn't about you. That woman is a through-and-through, super-entitled, bucking fitch.

I'm so sorry. :(

From the sounds of it, it wasn't about Zachy, it was about her. And to some, just by being a kid, they are 'out of control'. So imho, don't beat yourself up over that part... some people just don't like kids and unfortunately let the parents know. Just wait til she's around a truly out of control child and gets food or poop thrown at her or vomited on... then she'll know Z was an angel and parents were attentive and aware. Until then... xoxoxoox

Girl. That lady needs more fiber. It was lunch, not an intimate dinner - get a grip lady!

I so agree - it's how she began that interaction, with her 'eye problems' as the kids at school say, that really set the tone. She had the opportunity to set any number of different tones, and she took the petulant route.

Re Ron's reaction, I'm torn. I believe the high road is the best road, and at the same time, that people need to have their bad behaviors reflected back to them, and it's tricky how to do that.

anyhow, so sorry you had to deal with that! As if it weren't enough that you're dealing with the power struggles of a 2 yo. She's just cranky because Cauliflower in Chevy Chase is $5.00.

Love you!!!!!!!
